The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant a U/A 16+ certificate to actor Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, clearing the final legal hurdle ahead of its scheduled release on January 9.
The court’s order comes after the film’s certification process was unexpectedly stalled, despite an initial recommendation for a U/A certificate by the examining committee. The CBFC later sent the film for a review following complaints alleging that it hurt religious sentiments.
During the previous hearing, the High Court had reserved its order after listening to arguments from both sides. Counsel for KVN Productions argued that the delay had put the film’s release and substantial financial stakes at risk, while the CBFC maintained that the review process was within its authority.
The Additional Solicitor General, representing the CBFC, informed the court that the complaint which led to the review was filed by a member of the examining committee, whose objections were not recorded at the time of screening. It was also revealed that the CBFC Chairperson had taken the decision to halt the certification process.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay alongside Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol. The film has drawn significant attention as Vijay’s final film before entering active politics, and the court’s directive now ensures it can proceed with its Pongal release as planned.
